shelters

This series of nine photographs depicts one-person bunkers, also known as Einmannbunker, dating from the Second World War. These small concrete shelters have survived on the site of the abandoned German synthetic petrol factory in Police, one of the key industrial facilities of the Third Reich, which was repeatedly subjected to heavy bombing.

Unlike large fortifications, Einmannbunkers were compact reinforced-concrete shelters designed to protect a single person during air raids. Usually placed near factories, warehouses, and transport hubs, they served as emergency refuges for workers and guards. Their solitary scale and enclosed form invite reflection on protection, safety, and the distance between people.
